Flamme Rouge Racing is back and is promising to give virtual cycling a major shake-up with the launch of their Super 6IX series. As always, The Coalition is ready to take on the challenge! The Coalition loves to get involved with amny new racing series and as long-time participants of the many FRR Tours, this time is no different. Read on to find out more information about the new series, as well as some feedback from some of our members who have participated in the past.
A Fresh Take on Team Racing?
According to Rich from Flamme Rouge Racing, Super 6IX is... "a more engaging Global Team Racing experience designed to keep riders of similar power racing competitively with the overall aim at crowning World Community Champions".
"Isn't this just another team racing series like all the others?", I hear you ask. When asked how Super 6IX differs from existing competitions on Zwift, Rich explains: "Ladder League is martini racing, and there really is little between ZRL and DRS. However, 6IX asks all of your riders to play a role in contributing towards your team's success, and will utilise different race features to challenge riders. This also helps to level the virtual racing field".
What sets Super 6IX apart is its strategic five rider team structure where each member fulfills specific roles based on vELO rankings, moving beyond simple individual racing. Teams can recruit unlimited riders, allowing managers to rotate personnel and reassign roles for each race—introducing dynamic tactical elements to the competition. The series operates across four timezone-based leagues, with races scheduled every Friday between 18:00-20:00 local time.
The FRR Experience: Challenging, Rewarding, and Community-Driven
Coalition riders who have competed in FRR events are passionate about what makes these races special. Jill, part of our US-based community, who has been racing FRR since its beginning in October 2022, shares her experience:
"I love it because of the challenge of racing day after day, with the races getting more challenging as the days go on. For myself, I get stronger as the series goes on and it's such a great feeling. Also, there is always a goal to be set, whether you are in the top of one of the categories or whether it's to finish the series."
Kari another member of our strong US female community echoes this enthusiasm:
"Yes, I love FRR, if you want a physical and mental challenge FRR is it! It is the closest thing to a real life tour experience but indoors. I have done both the week-long tour and the 21 stage tour."
UK-based David doesn't shy away from acknowledging the difficulty:
"They are hard! I can't remember the last time I completed a full tour. With life, injuries and fatigue all getting in the way, it is a huge accomplishment just to finish these events. But in good news, they are also super fun. I love how The Coalition comes together and we have riders acting as domestiques for others."
Something for Everyone
One of FRR's greatest strengths is its inclusivity. Coalition's Kari highlights the variety on offer:
"I like FRR because it has something for everyone: if you like to sprint you can go for the green jersey; if you are a climber you can go for the polka dots; or if you want to be the best in the GC, or if you just want to ride you can do one race here and one race there and not do all within a single tour."
When it comes to choosing a role in Super 6IX, David knows his strengths:
"I so wish I could be a GC rider, but I'm naturally a sprinter. Although I don't always have the highest watts, I can usually still produce good short-term power after an attritional race."
Jill has also found her niche:
"I think I see myself as a climber – I definitely don't have a sprint, and I am better at climbing than anything else."
Flexibility for Real Life
Understanding that virtual racers have lives outside of Zwift, FRR offers some practical solutions. "I also like that there are multiple time zones", Kari notes. "When you race everyday, it is hard to stick to the same time. Being able to race in the am one day and then pm the next helps with people's busy lifestyles."
The series also caters to all ability levels: "There are many levels, so you don't have to be intimidated if you are just starting out with racing."
One bike fits all
Super 6IX features enforced bike selection to ensure fair competition. David shares his perspective:
"I'm a bit particular when it comes to my avatar and bike/wheel selection. For instance, you won't ever find me with a disc wheel on a road bike! I'm all for neutralising the equipment, but I do wish Rich picked a cooler looking bike, or it was truly neutralised so you could ride any bike you like and in game they would all perform the same."
The Community Spirit
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of FRR is the community spirit. As Jill beautifully puts it:
"Maybe my favourite thing about FRR racing, is encouraging those around me day after day, to keep on going, gathering a group and working together to finish. Even if we are not the fastest, we still finish with the help of our friends (teammates and competitors)."
Why Should You Join?
Rich poses a thought-provoking question:
"When you look at the events available, how many stand out to you? Team racing is great for the community and Clubs, but there has been nothing new and different for us to get our teeth into... until now."
